The Death of SB236: Where Can You Smoke in Las Vegas?

$

Recently, Nevada Senate Bill 236, which would allow businesses and events to permit the use of cannabis, died in the assembly! As stated on the NV legislative website, the bill would have allowed certain businesses to obtain a permit, issued by county and/or city government, to allow cannabis use on the business’ property or at various events.

So, if a business wanted to open its outside lounge to allow cannabis consumption and charge a fee, they would be able to do so, simply by obtaining a permit. That permit would easily help businesses generate more revenue and in turn, benefit the city’s economy as a whole. The denial of this decision doesn’t just affect these businesses and events for folks ‘partying’ on the strip. It affects anyone who wants to publicly indulge in smoking cannabis while in Las Vegas.

Since July 1st, 2017, you can purchase and have up to one ounce of cannabis in your possession without facing criminal charges. This is great but where can you go to smoke it? Casinos and hotels still prohibit smoking weed. This decision comes by way of Dr. Tony Alma of the Nevada Gaming Commission. If you feel ‘lucky’ enough, you may risk the chance of just going outside to smoke. But, again, it’s a risk. You may not get jail time for that first offense of smoking in public, but the $600 fine may leave a damper on your Vegas trip!

This is where SB236 would and should have come into play. Not only is the death of SB236 a bad thing for expanded growth potential for businesses. It also hinders the success potential for the cannabis industry in Nevada. The people that come here to buy and enjoy cannabis must be able to do just that… buy it and enjoy it! The state of Nevada is looking to gain a possible $73 million in tax revenue off of an estimated $484 million dollars in 2018. And this is a lowball projection. With all of that money on the line, something has got to give!

Here is where Senator Tick Segerblom comes into play. If the name Segerblom sounds familiar it may be because there is a Cannabis strain named after him. He also basically wrote the Nevada recreational bill along with SB236. Senator Segerblom stated in a recent webinar interview that legal steps will now be taken regarding a solution to the death of SB236. If you’re interested in hearing the 15-minute webinar broadcast just follow Las Vegas Cannabis Deals and scroll to Tick’s photo for the audio link.

As Las Vegas remains to be one of the most popular celebration mecca’s in the world, it’s hand in legal cannabis will only continue to expand. For now, let’s hope the process picks up and perhaps a new version of SB236 rolls out soon.

Las Vegas Metro Police Raid An Illegal Dispensary

The cost of getting into the cannabis business in the state of Nevada can be very hefty. Any interested applicants must be aware that setting up in the state requires personal and financial background checks, loads of paperwork, the hiring of an attorney and a variety of other tasks. It also requires an initial application fee of $250,000 to gain the right to move forward. This initial application fee could be the primary reason that some in the Las Vegas valley have chosen to set up shop illegally.

On September 19th 2017, Las Vegas Metro Police raided Elevate Medical Pharmacy. During the raid LVMP seized approximately 25lbs. of cannabis flower, 36 lbs. of edibles and 80 grams of concentrate wax. Clayton Bernard, age 36, was arrested for being the head of the operation. According to LVMP the tip was called into the Nevada Tax Department, who oversees cannabis regulations & operational procedures. The Clark County officials then reached out to LV Metro PD.

While being arrested, Bernard claimed that he was not a US citizen and did not understand his rights. He also made a claim that he was trying to start his own country. Bernard, who goes by the name of “Raz,” told police that Elevate Medical Pharmacy did not have anything to do with cannabis sales despite the discovery made at the location on 2951 Westwood Drive in Las Vegas. The establishment never had a license to sell cannabis but the state does provide a link for those wondering if the dispensary they visit is legitimate on marijuana.nv.gov. Even though recreational cannabis sales are now legal in Nevada, if caught selling illegally you’ll still receive a felony charge.

Clayton ‘Raz’ Bernard

There had been other illegal operations in the Las Vegas valley in the past with most of those occurrences involving cannabis delivery services. Despite these issues, it had been some time since a cannabis operation had been shut down for being unlicensed. With the Elevate incident, it is doubtful any new illegal dispensaries will be popping up any time soon. With the cost of being caught, it’d be just about the same amount to start a legal operation.

Do You Remember When Cannabis WAS Medicine?

Unless you were around in 1833 – 1900 you wouldn’t be able to answer the question above. You will however, gain some understanding about the confusion as to why cannabis is not looked at in the same light as it once was. It’s no secret. Before prohibition, cannabis WAS medicine and had been commonly available in pharmacies as such. At one point in time, a Sears & Roebuck catalog had advertisements for Heroin, which was provided by Bayer (yeah, the ‘aspirin’ company). Tinctures and other mixtures were made available to treat a variety of ailments. But what many do not know is this. The origin of the research that first led scientists to publicly vouch for cannabis as a useful medicine. This research was conducted by Irish born doctor Sir William Brooke O’Shaughnessy.

During that time, there were quite a few impressive minds that had also been studying the effects of cannabis. O’Shaughnessy notably set himself apart in the way in which he conducted his research. He would collect information from well-defined local knowledge networks while relentlessly documenting them. He would also credit all of his sources, human or bibliographic. O’Shaughnessy first studied medicine at Trinity before transferring to the University of Edinburgh which was considered to be one of the best medical schools in the world. In 1833 O’Shaughnessy took a job with the East India Company to work in Calcutta as an assistant surgeon. This is where the most of his cannabis research was conducted. Here, he began noting the effects through his interactions with the indigenous people of the area. However, the medicinal benefits of cannabis had been known in India for thousands of years prior.

O’Shaughnessy was the first ‘Westerner’ to claim that cannabis could be used as a medicinal drug. The papers on his experiments with cannabis were published in the Journal of the Asiatic Society of Bengal in late 1839. O’Shaughnessy conducted experiments on everything from animals to children, by delivering small doses of Cannabis Indica and documenting the effects. Sir Russell Reynolds, the personal physician to Queen Victoria, was among those who promoted cannabis’ medical use after reading O’Shaughnessy’s research. It is claimed that Sir Reynolds subsequently prescribed cannabis to Queen Victoria for menstrual pains. O’Shaughnessy’s papers have also inspired researchers like Dr. Tod Mikuriya, considered to be the Grandfather of all medical cannabis research. Dr. Mikuriya reportedly reprinted O’Shaughnessy’s paper as the lead article in Marijuana: Medical Papers 1839–1972 (published in 1973). This alone helped reinvigorate the modern day medical interest in cannabis.

O’Shaughnessy’s scientific prowess in cannabis research was so profound that James Mills, the author of the Cannabis Britannica, wrote about it. Mills said it was no surprise that O’Shaughnessy was perhaps the first doctor “to find out for himself exactly what the impact of cannabis substances was rather than to rely on hearsay or on recycled versions of other writers’ compilations.”Sir O’Shaughnessy has largely been forgotten but his impact on cannabis research lives on almost 130 years after his death. When he died, he left a legacy that would inspire generations of ongoing research in the field. His contribution continues to grow.

Today, we have an uphill battle in re-educating and reminding the public of cannabis’ numerous health benefits. All the while de-stigmatizing it from being a dangerous ‘drug’ that should be feared. Negative propaganda of the past and present still clouds the minds of many who could instead potentially benefit from cannabis. The positive is that through today’s technology we are able to research and share information on cannabis studies and gain a proper understanding rather than merely accepting what is told to us through the FDA and/or pill industry paid doctors. One day, hopefully soon, when we visit our physician’s office, the benefits of cannabis will be discussed and offered just as much, if not more than Big Pharma pills!

Native American Tribe Opens Largest Marijuana Store on The Planet!

Varied backgrounds are getting into the cannabis industry in Las Vegas. From Frank Hawkins, former Oakland Raiders running back who is now part owner and Executive Director of Nevada Wellness Center dispensary. To Ed Bernstein, local accident & work injury attorney who also owns ReLeaf dispensary. The list goes on to include many already vested in other large business ventures in the valley. The latest to get into the cannabis green rush is the Paiute Tribe of Nevada. Less than a month ago Benny Tso, the tribe’s Chairman announced the initial opening of what has been dubbed the “Largest Marijuana Store on the Planet.”

Located off of Main Street & Washington Avenue in the downtown area of Las Vegas, NuWu Cannabis Marketplace sits on a 31-acre plot of tribal land which many locals weren’t even aware the Paiute Tribe owned. Once the full expansion is completed, NuWu will include at least 2 dispensaries and 3 massive greenhouses of 28,000 square feet. Each with a 10,000 square foot warehouse and a kitchen. “NuWu actually means ‘the people'” said Chris Spotted Eagle, vice-chairman of the tribe. NuWu Cannabis Marketplace will be bigger than any medical cannabis facility in Nevada, Arizona or Colorado. The Paiute Tribe partnered with Ultra Health, who has been in discussions with at least 20 other tribes in three states who are considering using sovereign nation status to get into the medical marijuana business.

Benny Tso explained that there had been recent changes in the reservation’s drug-testing policies so he eventually bought his first cannabis products from the tribe’s store. Benny mentioned that he picked up “Willie’s Reserve & Skywalker OG.” Just a few years ago, the idea of a cannabis business like this would have been laughed off by the tribe. Now, the small tribe which has fewer than 100 members, all voted to proceed. Benny mentioned… “I was shocked and surprised that the tribe overwhelmingly accepted and wanted to go forward with this venture.”

The Paiute Tribe is betting on Las Vegas being the hottest market for marijuana in the US. The new facility, which full expansion will take another few months, will cost roughly $5 million. NuWu plans to eventually stay open 24 hours and establish a drive-through service for customers.

Elevate Your Mind with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Cannabis

As with any professional industry, there are educational paths available for those who aspire to make a career within them. Today, the canna-business is rapidly becoming not only a ‘cool’ industry to be a part of but the earning potential is seemingly limitless. Entry level positions begin at a suggested US minimum wage of $15 an hour. However, much higher wages are reachable. This is especially for those willing to acquire the necessary knowledge to move forward amongst a rising influx of competition.

That said, a bachelor of science is now obtainable in the field of cannabis. Northern Michigan University now offers a ‘Medical Plant Chemistry Degree,’ which is a four-year program focusing on classes like organic chemistry, biochemistry, soil, genetics, financial management, and perspectives on society. NMU isn’t the first to offer courses in medicinal cannabis. Harvard, University of Denver, Vanderbilt University, Ohio State University and others offer limited classes on cannabis policy and legalities. Modern establishments such as Oaksterdam University, Humboldt Cannabis College, THC University, the Grow School, and Clover Leaf each offer various “cannabis certificates.” But what makes NMU unique is it is the first to have such a detailed and diverse learning culture built around cannabis. It is a mix of chemistry, biology, botany, horticulture, marketing and finance all into one four-year program!

The first semester for the program has just begun which currently has 12 students. The director of the university’s chemistry department, Mark Paulsen, is looking forward to many others to sign up for future classes.  “We’re gaining students every week,” he said. “With a full 12 months of recruitment, we expect that to grow.” The idea for the program initially came from associate chemistry professor Brandon Canfield after his attendance at the American Chemical Society’s annual meeting in San Diego. “I heard all about the need for analytical chemists (in the cannabis industry) and all sorts of interesting talks. That was the initial spark,” he said.

One required course is appropriately titled ‘Chemistry 420.’ The class is an advanced analytical course covering various bioactive compounds and their plant origins, and metabolite chemistry. The syllabus includes the history of medicinal plant use and cannabis chemistry, as well as a lab where students perform plant tissue extraction for alkaloids and terpenoids. These studies focus on the purification procedures of different plants.

This type of degree program is timely for Michigan which recently legalized medical cannabis. This is also in addition to the 29 other US states that now allow either recreational and/or medicinal legalization. Hopefully, programs like these will continue to expand throughout many other colleges and universities. As the negative stigma attached to cannabis becomes more obsolete and its positive effects continue to grow through public exposure, the need for education and knowledge will continue to establish itself. We will see an increase of specialists and trained professionals in the medical cannabis industry as it grows. And with this new demand, the industry will continue to advance, professionally and culturally, as more people become involved.

Can Medical Cannabis Be Used to Treat Alzheimer’s?

$

Does the name J147 sound familiar to you? Probably not, unless you happen to dabble in Alzheimer’s research. This new drug candidate will be used by researchers to study links between THC, inflammation and plaque build-up in the brain. J147 is not THC but it does appear to have the same affects. Rather than pure THC, J147 must be used due to current government positions on THC testing for medicinal purposes. All federal marijuana is grown & tested at one facility at the University of Mississippi and is usually only at a potency level of 8%.

THC has been found to remove toxic clumps of amyloid beta protein in the brain. This protein is thought to assist in the early progression of Alzheimer’s Disease. One study, published in 2014 by the Journal of Alzheimer’s Disease, supports the effectiveness of THC in prohibiting the growth of toxic amyloid protein. In 2006 researchers at the Scripps Research Institute found that THC inhibits the formation of amyloid plaques by blocking the enzyme in the brain that produces them. More recent studies  support that position. These studies were conducted under the guidance of David Shubert, Professor & Laboratory Head of the Cellular Neurobiology Lab of the Salk Institute for Biological Studies in California.

“Although other studies have offered evidence that cannabinoids might be neuroprotective against the symptoms of Alzheimer’s, we believe our study is the first to demonstrate that cannabinoids affect both inflammation and amyloid beta accumulation in nerve cells,” says Shubert. (*See here for more details.)

Schubert and his colleagues tested the effects of THC on human neurons grown in the lab that mimic the effects of Alzheimer’s Disease. The J147 drug compound works by passing from the lungs to the bloodstream. Here, it attaches to cannabinoid receptors (CB) 1 and 2, which are found on cell surfaces all over the body. Research suggests that by binding to these receptors, THC could have another effect on aging brains as it it appears to help the body clear out the toxic accumulations – or ‘plaques’ – of amyloid beta. The exact cause of Alzheimer’s is not clear but it’s thought to result from a build-up of amyloid plaque & neurofibrillary tangling.

According to Antonio Carras from Schubert’s team, “inflammation within the brain is a major component of the damage associated with Alzheimer’s Disease, but it has always been assumed that this response was coming from immune-like cells in the brain, not the nerve cells themselves.” The idea here is that if scientists find something that eases brain inflammation while encouraging the body to clear out these lesions, we may be on the way to finding the first effective treatment for Alzheimer’s ever.

This research is very exciting and has thus far, only been demonstrated in neurons in the lab. Observing the link between THC, reduced inflammation & plaque build-up by Schubert’s team will be the next step for clinical trials. Since pure THC could not be used, this makes J147 the next best candidate for testing. Many are hopeful in looking forward to what David Schubert and team find in terms of treating Alzheimer’s. If you would like to read up on more of the work David Schubert and his team are conducting, click here to view his link on the Salk Institute for Biological Studies website.

Celebrities Who Have Been Arrested for Cannabis in 2017

$

The general public is regularly fascinated with the lifestyles of celebrities. And with the possibility of more arrests to come, 2017 has brought us 19 famous faces that have had run-ins with law for drugs. Celebrity drug arrests aren’t anything new, but what was interesting this year was the number of marijuana offenses in comparison to other substances. Out of the 19 celebs arrested for drugs, 15 of them involved marijuana. As cannabis becomes increasingly popular and more citizens demand their right to it, the likelihood of such arrests should begin to lower as legalization spreads. Hopefully.

Those caught for non-cannabis offenses are as follows. Rose McGowan was arrested November 14th for felony possession of cocaine after traces of it were found in her wallet which was left at Dulles International airport earlier this year. Charlie Heaton, the ‘Stranger Things’ star, was denied entry into the US after cocaine was found in his baggage upon arriving at LAX. Yvonne Elliman-Alexander, the ‘If I Can’t Have You” singer, was arrested in Guam for possession of 8 ounces of meth and a paraphernalia pipe. Her husband, Allen Alexander, was also arrested for possession of three grams of marijuana. Rapper Shock G (Greg Jacobs) of ‘Digital Underground,’ was arrested for paraphernalia only, no substances involved.

All of the cannabis related offenses that took place in the US were in states that do not have any active medical or recreational cannabis laws in effect. This is with the exception(s) of Cassidy (Barry Reese). The New Jersey rapper was arrested on November 19th in Jersey City for possession of marijuana & paraphernalia along with Shanay Reese. Currently, New Jersey allows possession of up to 2 oz. of usable product. Cassidy was still arrested in front of his home and charged with possession after police followed up on a report of a parked van that reeked of marijuana. The judge remanded the charges to Jersey City Municipal Court where Cassidy’s situation will be handled as a ‘disorderly persons’ charge rather than as a criminal offense.

Another arrest did occur in California, a state with medical & recreational consumption laws. However, Sacramento Kings forward Zach Randolph must not have been aware of the specifics. Randolph was caught carrying marijuana with the intent to sell while on a federal public housing property in Los Angeles. In another case, Adrien Robinson, former New York Giants WR, was arrested for possession of more than 20 lbs. of cannabis & paraphernalia in Mifflinburg, PA on July 31st. While Pennsylvania does have a ’30 Day supply’ consumption law, it was clearly not meant for 20 lbs. worth within that timeframe. Mr. Robinson may possibly have a felony conviction as a result.

Musicians got the most arrests this year for cannabis related offenses. There were 8 total. This was followed by 4 NFL players, 4 Actors, 1 college football player, 1 NBA player & 1 comedian/radio personality. Of those arrested, 16 are men and 3 women. From a race standpoint, it’s 11 African Americans and 8 White. 17 of the offenses were conducted in the US, with a few being at US borders, while the remaining 2 were outside of the US (Dubai & Guam).

Here is a list of people arrested for cannabis related charges. Click their names for details.

Trevone Boykin (Seattle Seahawks QB)

Cassidy (Barry Reese) (Rapper)

Chief Keef (Keith Cozert) (Rapper)

Ethan Cutkosky (Shameless Actor)

Melissa Etheridge (Singer)

Corey Feldman (Actor)

Demetrius Harris (Kansas City Chiefs TE)

Aaron Jones (Green Bay Packers RB)

(Photo of Matthew Morgan, from the Tryke Cultivator)

Tryke Companies recently announced that its co-founder and CEO Matthew Morgan would be resigning. The company is a network of ten licenses in Arizona and Nevada for the cultivation, production and retail sale of medical and recreational cannabis. Tryke retail operations, d.b.a. Reef Dispensaries, currently has recreational shops in Nevada (Las Vegas, North Las Vegas, Sparks, Sun Valley) and medical dispensaries in Arizona (Central Phoenix, Queen Creek). Additional locations are to be coming soon.

The new shift in management will allow Morgan to pursue further business ventures in California’s rapidly expanding cannabis market. This is right on time for CA’s legalization of recreational cannabis which goes live January 1, 2018. Morgan will be staying onboard with Tryke to advise as a consultant during the transitional period. Co-founder and Chairman, Adam Ryan, will take over as operating CEO for Reef Dispensaries. Morgan stated, “These last four years have been some of the most amazing years of my life, from the great people I’ve had a chance to meet with to the next level of experiences that I’ve been a part of. That said, I have come to the decision to resign as CEO of Reef Dispensaries. This has been one of the most difficult decisions I’ve ever had to make, but I wish Reef and all of my colleagues nothing but the best moving forward. As for the next chapter? California, here I come.”

Adam Ryan expressed that Matt Morgan had done a great job building the company over the past few years and wished him great success in his new venture(s). Along with Morgan’s departure, Tryke will be bringing in two new additions to its management team.

Mark Conley joins the Tryke Companies team as Director of Retail. Conley was a district manager for Wal-Mart for 25 years and will be will use this expertise to oversee retail operations at (6) Reef locations across Nevada and Arizona. He will also be taking over any additional future dispensary expansions.

Danielle El Kadi has joined Tryke Companies as its new Head of Wholesale. El Kadi brings her vast knowledge of cannabis brands and products to Tryke. She previously worked as Director of Sales and Client Relations for Evergreen Organix.

Is Las Vegas Developing the Nation’s First Cannabis Lounges?

$
0
0

On December 13th, key leaders in the Nevada cannabis industry met at Las Vegas City Hall to speak with city officials about developing cannabis lounges. Nevada would be adding its name to the short list of current and possible upcoming consumption lounges. Back in 2016 voters in Denver, Colorado passed ‘Initiative 300’ to regulate cannabis consumption lounges within the city. Just one application has been received thus far. West Hollywood, California plans to accept applications for an initial eight consumption lounges that would be attached to cannabis dispensaries starting in January 2018.

But an ordinance proposed by Las Vegas Councilman Bob Coffin would allow the city to license cannabis consumption lounges and the proposal itself was brought months after SB236 was quickly shot down by the legal arm of state legislature (see here for details). That bill would have allowed for the same general privileges that would be allowed in this new proposal. The ordinance, which Coffin said is being drafted could possibly change before the City Council votes on the issue to allow for a variety of consumption-friendly establishments.

This proposed position from Nevada officials is predictable. Considering the initial stance that was the backbone of passing recreational cannabis law in Nevada was regulating cannabis consumption just like alcohol. For Nevada to generate the amount of tax revenue that they had planned for by legalizing recreational cannabis, the 43 million plus people who visit Las Vegas for it will need viable places to hang out and enjoy their herb, legally. Nevada is known for regulated gambling, prostitution, drinking and strip clubs. Cannabis should not seem like such a monster to conquer.

THE RULES

Cannabis lounges would not be allowed to store or sell cannabis, or alcohol. Lounge employees would not be allowed to consume while on the job. They would be allowed to sell consumption tools, various paraphernalia items, food and beverages, and provide various forms of media and entertainment. State law currently bans cannabis deliveries to anywhere other than a private residence, so customers would have to bring their own products into the lounges.

All seems clear and at least somewhat fair regarding the lounge rules, however, there has been some controversy coming from some who are currently invested in the cannabusiness. Some feel that these lounges would allow for the spread of black market sales because there would not be a way to confirm whether or not cannabis was legally purchased since patrons would be bringing in the product. Darcy Adelbai-Hurd, senior management analyst for the city of Las Vegas, said applicants would need to address those issues, including how to comply with the Cole Memo, in a safety plan that would be required to obtain a license. The Cole Memo is a document drawn up by James M. Cole, Deputy Attorney General, in August 2013 which instructed federal prosecutors not to go after cannabis businesses that abide by state laws.

The consumption program would initially start on a pilot basis running for two years with the possibility of the regulations being adopted permanently afterwards. No matter what measures are adopted to satisfy Nevada officials, in the long run, anything that needs to be done to provide safe and secure places for tourists and locals to consume cannabis outside of private residences will be welcomed both on and outside of the famous Las Vegas Strip. Assistant City Attorney Bryan Scott said lounges could be approved in March, which could put Las Vegas in the running for having the nation’s first government-regulated marijuana consumption lounges.

2 Nevada Medical Students are Rewriting the DUI Laws on Cannabis

Daniel Becker, a man suspected of hitting multiple vehicles and killing three pedestrians in Las Vegas, NV said he takes medication for seizures and used cannabis before the crash. The arrest report stated that Becker has a medical condition which produces seizures. For his condition, Becker had been prescribed Phenytoin but also disclosed that he smoked cannabis daily and had done so before work on the day of the crash, December 13th  at 5:30 a.m. Police said Becker was driving a Ford Expedition when he struck the back of a Ford Mustang. Becker did not stop at the scene and headed southbound where he hit the back of a GMC Jimmy, continued over a center median and hit three pedestrians. Becker continued and struck a BMW 5 Series and a Chevrolet Silverado. All three pedestrians died at the scene of the crash.

The incident was tragic and leaves questions of, to what level, if any, did marijuana cause in the crash?Especially considering Phenytoin was also part of his regular treatment? Daniel Becker’s incident will surely be replayed as law enforcement awaits a way to successfully field test marijuana sobriety. Despite the increasingly legal use of cannabis in many states, cops still don’t have the equivalent of a reliable alcohol breathalyzer or blood test to understand what cannabis is doing in the brain chemically. Though a blood test exists that can detect some of marijuana’s components, there is no standardized amount in the breath or blood that gives police or courts or anyone else a good sense of who is impaired and to what degree.

A multitude of scientists are working hard to create a standard chemical test to re-define the behavioral indicators police use to determine impairment levels. Aside from legal complications for testing due to cannabis remaining as a Schedule 1 Drug, creating a standardized blood or breath test is also a tricky chemistry issue because of the properties of the main psychoactive chemical in cannabis: delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol, or THC. In states like Colorado, there is a THC blood test that law enforcement can use to show “presumed” impairment. If a person has more than 5 nanograms of delta-9-THC per milliliter of blood, a court or jury can infer that they are impaired, according to Colorado law.

Here enters Graham Lambert and Charles Cullison, two graduate students at Touro University Nevada (Henderson, NV). They told the President of the Nevada State Medical Association, Dr. Weldon Havins, that under current Nevada State DUI testing, law enforcement officials would not be able to detect the essential components in cannabis that could impair drivers. Lambert and Cullison’s research was so precise that Nevada legislatures passed a new DUI measure governing testing for marijuana impairment at field sobriety tests. Gov. Brian Sandoval signed the law into effect this past July. A blood test is now checking for delta-9-THC, the primary psychoactive ingredient, and 11-OH-THC which is a cannabis metabolite associated with cognitive impairment. Before that, urine tests would only be able to detect THC-COOH, a non-psychoactive waste product of marijuana that has no association with motor impairment and can remain in a person’s system for weeks after cannabis has been consumed.

These medical students, Lambert & Cullison, have opened the playing field for sound science regarding testing for the psychoactive ingredients in cannabis but there is much more work that needs to be done to create a fair and accurate testing system similar to the accuracy of alcohol sobriety tests.

Canna-butter Explosion Lands A Las Vegas Man in the Hospital

A Las Vegas resident was badly burned while cooking cannabis to create canna-butter in his apartment just days before Christmas. Las Vegas firefighters responded to 2121 North Jones Boulevard in Las Vegas, NV around 8:49 p.m. on Dec. 19th for what was reported to be a grease fire in one of the upstairs apartments.

When firefighters arrived, the fire had already gone out but there was a man in front of the building who had been burned. The victim, unnamed by authorities, had suffered about 18% burns to his body, mostly his arm. He was then sent to the University Medical Trauma unit. Firefighters later determined that this was not a regular cooking accident but was caused by butane used in the cooking process. When they arrived they found evidence of a fire by observing the stovetop, and microwave above it, had both been damaged by fire.

Firefighters followed burn spots on the ground outside of the building and found an object that was thought to be a pipe bomb because of the cylindrical shape. This was later determined to be a known tool used for creating canna-butter at home. By cooking cannabis through a process of steps, concentrated THC can be produced which can then be cooked and mixed with butter. This can then be added to any recipe calling for butter to be added. However, this process can evidently be hazardous if executed incorrectly.

There are various methods of extraction but one popular way has been through the use of butane to speed up the cooking process. When the right measures aren’t taken to safeguard, the butane can explode and cause severe damage or potential death. Firefighter investigators believe this is what happened in this incident. Especially after speaking with the victim’s Father, who had shown the younger man how to make canna-butter.

Narcotics detectives with the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police are still investigating the incident and told reporters that cooking the concentrate in a private home is not illegal but they would not recommend it.

Many in the world of music, entertainment, cannabis culture and damn near everywhere else are familiar with Calvin Broadus, aka Snoop Dogg. One of his companies, MERRY JANE, launched in 2015 as a cannabis-focused digital media platform. Co-founded with media entrepreneur Ted Chung, MERRY JANE showcases content on business, cannabis industry politics, along with a database / locator for cannabis strains and dispensaries.

For a limited time, Snoop Dogg and MERRY JANE are teaming up with Jack in the Box to launch a campaign commemorating the legalization of recreational cannabis in California. The late-night ‘MERRY Munchie Meal’ will include: Halfsies (½ curly fries, ½ onion rings), two famous Jack in the Box Tacos, five Mini Churros, three Crispy Chicken Strips and a drink for the highly unbelievable price of $4.20. The clever wordplay and low price are likely to spark interest in new customers, along with faithful ones, to take advantage.

According to Iwona Alter, Chief Marketing Officer of Jack in the Box, Jack’s Munchie Meals have been very popular in how they speak to and connect with their audience. Jack in the Box is a frequented fast food spot for many especially at night after concerts, festivals, clubs, and various other. This campaign is yet another way to help Jack in the Box welcome those late-night cravers. This is not the first time Jack in the Box has given a nod to the cannabis community and probably won’t be the last. Some may remember the “Two Tacos for 99 cents” campaign and the introduction of the initial Munchie Meal product line.

“Launching the MERRY Munchie Meal is the perfect way for both companies to celebrate legalization in our shared home state of California,” said Scott Chung, Chief Operations Officer of MERRY JANE. “MERRY JANE is the industry leader bridging mainstream brands and legal cannabis culture. Leveraging our Emmy-nominated content production, MERRY JANE has created a campaign with Jack in the Box that marries our brands’ voices.”

The late-night value ‘MERRY Munchie Meals’ will be available from January 18th through the 25th so you’ll have to plan fast to take advantage. They will also only be available in Snoop’s hometown of Long Beach at the following locations:

5601 Pacific Coast Hwy, Long Beach, CA 90804

3032 Palo Verde Ave, Long Beach, CA 90808

652 Atlantic Ave, Long Beach, CA 90802
